Located in the most prestigious business precinct in Australia, the 1 Castlereagh Street podium project required the use of an Insulated Won-Door FireGuard Movable Fire Wall (-/120/120) to create a modern contemporary space while still maintaining the proportion of the heritage building. Installed in October 2021 in the Ground Floor Lobby entrance, this door is equipped with infrared obstruction beams that detect any obstructions along the opening of the doors pathway.

The building’s owner felt that its podium entrance, which featured a deeply recessed retail/ lobby podium, was unbefitting of its location on a busy city corner site located in the middle of the financial business core of the Sydney CBD. Fitzpatrick+Partners architects were called upon to upgrade the building’s base to the standard of service and delivery expected by commercial tenants in buildings within this part of the Sydney CBD.

Specifically, they were briefed to address the following problems:

  • The lack of a true address and front door to the building

  • Look at opportunities to expand the podium of the building to create optimum retail opportunities, particularly focussing around F+B users

  • Create or reinforce an architectural identity for the building as a whole, creating a signature

  • Create a comfortable relationship for the building against its Castlereagh and Hunter Street neighbours

The installation of a 9m wide 120min integrity & insulated model Won-Door provided the project team with the design flexibility to open up the GF Podium Lobby space offering a light, inviting and open space allowing free public traffic flow between retail and office environments. The Won-Door is wired into the building AC Power supply and has its own 24v back-up batteries in the event of a power failure.
